City Skylines is a city building game in the same vein as the classic Sim City, but brought up into staggering detail and complexity. City Skyline was released in march of 2015 to praise from critics and gamers alike for it's high level of detail, complexity and diverse set of options available when planning, building and running the city. The game also received praise for its low price point and its access through Valve's Steam distribution network.
Game Play
City Skylines is about building a city, period. There is no story line, no random events ( like in Sim City ) and there are no win conditions. There is only a blank 2 Km x 2 KM map, a highway off ramp, a very diverse tool set and the player's imagination. Players need to plan zoning, deploy infrastructure like electric, water and roads and, ultimately, create your city. each component does cost an amount of in game money and revenue is increased by attracting and taxing residents to your city. New buildings and components are unlocked by hitting certain population benchmarks. Different buildings can level up depending on their surrounding population, and education also has an impact on how well your population does and how much revenue you can generate from them. The game play isn't ground breaking, but the amount of detail you have at your disposal to construct your city is. Steam workshop has produced a number of mods already, increasing the options and play time of the game.
Presentation
City Skylines is an incredible presentation. Scale back to see your sweeping sky scrapers and residential districts or zoom right down to street level to watch you residents, and your residents are worth watching. The AI is such that the game will keep track of what each resident is doing, heading for home, going to work for a set amount of time or even leaving their dog tied outside a coffee shop and remembering to get them again when they have their coffee. The Individualism of each resident is truly astounding. The polish and display of City Skylines is polished and professional, a modern game in every sense.
